I tought it would be interesting to start a thread about discussing other means to enjoy the history of samurai and maybe give a few recommended work.
I rarely read manga but I would defenetly reccomend two series:
Blade of the immortals: Beautifull drawing, and despise a few fictionnal aspect, was done in a way to preserve the setting of the feudal Japan period. Very good story, and some very violent and disturbing scenes. Samurai in a cold real world after they trashed honors and morals. Interesting variety amongst the cast.
Lone Wolf and Cub: Old but classic series that also spawned several movies. Reading that alone is like reading an history book. Despise the inhuman skill of the main character, the story and setting are pretty realistic. Very addictive story that show many aspects of the life during that period.
As for movie, I can think of "seven samurai" and "zatoichi", which are both pretty accurate on the samurai era. Might not be suited for those who dig Hollywood stuff like the Last samurai tought. Altought it might be a welcome change of pace for those people frying their brain in blockbuster movies.

Many films by Kurosawa (director of Seven Samurai) are samurai stories and well worth watching:
Yojimbo (Fistfull of Dollars is a copy of this film) Sanjuro Throne Of Blood (version of Macbeth) Hidden Fortress (Star Wars was based on this) Rashomon (copied many times in tv/film) Kagemusha Ran (version of King Lear) -are some of his best.
Also Toshiro Mifune, who plays the lead role in most of the above films, played Musashi Miyamoto (Haohmaru) in the trilogy Samurai I, II, and III where he eventually fights Kojiro Sasaki (Ukyo) on Ganryu Isle.
